Chevrolet certainly surprised many people at this week’s New York International Auto Show when it rolled out a IROC-Z version of its latest Camaro muscle car. The IROC-Z nameplate is legendary among Camaro fans but had been out of circulation for a decade and had its best days more than 30 years ago.
Since resurrecting the Camaro for the 2010 model year, Chevy has gone on a retro kick, bringing back vintage versions of the famous sports car like the SS, ZL1 and the IROC-Z.
Now the 2018 IROC-Z′s return makes me wonder what’s next. What else would reappear, or the Yenko and Baldwin Motion special editions?
No — I think the next piece of Camaro kitsch to hit the market will be the 2018 IROC-Z made famous in the 1980s. It was the street version of the car used in the International Race of Champions, which was a sort of all-star game of motorsport.
I know — that race series fizzled years ago. But that’s no reason to count out the 2018 IROC-Z Camaro. After all, it brings on pangs of nostalgia for Generation-X car fans just like the 1970s and 1980s cars do for Baby Boomers.
As Chevy seeks to attract younger customers its cars may increasingly recall the decade of Knight Rider and Duran Duran. Other GM divisions may follow. Could there be another 2018 Chevy GTO or 2018 Pontiac Trans Am in the near future?
