Introduction
The minor face- and tail-lift for the 2017 Chevy IROC-Z Camaro doesn't come as a big surprise. An updated look was due, and all new IROC-Z Camaro’s get a wider lower mouth, a compressed upper grille, and most notably, one-piece taillamps. The bigger news, however, is the return of the 2017 IROC-Z Camaro Corvette model.
The 2017 IROC-Z Camaro returns with a backslash in its name and the track in its heart. Like the original 1967 Chevy IROC-Z Camaro, a production car built to race in the Canmaro racing series, the 2017 Chevy IROC-Z Camaro is street legal and track-ready. Chevy addressed the IROC-Z Camaro's primary athletic weakness (mass) by trimming its fighting weight to about 3,800 pounds. That's about 300 pounds less than the current older verison. It was achieved through lighter 19-inch wheels, carbon-ceramic brakes, thinner rear glass, an uncarpeted trunk, minimal sound-deadening material, manual seat adjustment, elimination of the rear seat pass-through, and putting air-conditioning and a stereo on the options list.
But if weight was a weakness, power and grip won't be. When you build a 7.0-liter V8, it's a shame to reserve it solely for the 2017 IROC-Z Camaro. The IROC-Z Camaro will use the same engine found in the current IROC-Z Camaro Corvette, generating 500 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque, put to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. A dry-sump oil system and transmission and differential coolers should help keep the IROC-Z Camaro lapping the field.
Prominent aerodynamic bodywork (fender flares, front and rear spoilers), four-way adjustable dampers and sticky Pirelli Trofeo tires ensure the Z/28 stays locked to the ground. Chevy says the 2017 IROC-Z Camaro can pull up to 1.06g on the skid pad, better than a stock Porsche 911.
The 2017 IROC-Z Camaro interior will also be suitably sparse, its modest highlights including special Recaro seats, a flat-bottom steering wheel and matte trim finish.
The 2017 Chevy IROC-Z Camaro goes on sale in the spring 2016. Chevy calls it a limited-edition model, but didn't specify how many units it would make, nor indicate any pricing. Expect it to land well north of the current 2017 Chevy IROC-Z Camaro Corvette's $55,000 base price.
